Excellent Long-Term Oncological Outcome After Elective Testis-Sparing Surgery For Leydig Cell Tumors: A Single-Centre Experience With 19 Cases
February 13, 2017
ORLANDO, FL (UroToday) - The authors routinely perform testis-sparing surgery for impalpable hypoechoic testicular masses.
The testes are delivered onto the surgical field through an inguinal incision. With assistance of intraoperative ultrasound, tumors are resected with a 2mm margin of healthy testicular parenchyma. Frozen section analysis of the mass is then obtained. In this abstract, Giannarini and colleagues report their experience with 19 consecutive patients who underwent the testis-sparing approach and were found to have Leydig cell tumor on final pathology. All intra-operative frozen sections were reliable in this series. After a mean follow-up of 100 months, no local or distant recurrences were noted.
The fact that frozen-section analysis was 100% accurate in identifying Leydig cell pathology is very valuable clinical information and needs to be validated by other centers. Read a Related Review
